A fine cased pair of German percussion target pistols
late 19th/early 20th century
late 19th/early 20th century
Each with 9 7/8 inch browned and fluted octagonal barrel with eight groove rifling in .40 caliber; matte top flat; breech and muzzle inlaid with gold bands; undersides with German BUG commercial proofs. Casehardened and breeches inlaid with gold borders and etched and engraved with florals. Gold-bordered tangs with adjustable, fire-blued rear sights and numbered in gold 1 and 2 respectively. Casehardened and gold-bordered locks, the lockplates etched and engraved with leafy meander and two cherubs at target practice; cocks with gold borders and floral decoration en suite. Set triggers. Spur triggers and triggerguard tangs decorated as the locks. Domed buttcaps etched and engraved with panels of foliage between raised ribs. Figured walnut half-stocks. Brass wrist escutcheons engraved with a coat-of-arms. Complete with original red velour-lined case, the lid veneered with burl walnut framing herringboned panels and with brass corners and brass escutcheon cast and chased with the same coat-of-arms as the pistols. Accessories include brass and copper powder flask, two bullet molds (one for ball and one for conical projectile), mallet, cleaning rod with fitting, wad cutter, oiler, rear sight key and combination nipple wrench/screwdriver/pick.
Condition: Excellent and showing little, if any, use. Case lid with light marks. Lining showing some wear and staining, the piping partially loose.
