An interesting Spanish colonial powder horn
18th or early 19th century

The 7 inch section of horn with flat wooden plug at the narrow end, below an iron staple; the other plug and, presumably, the spout missing; fitted with narrow leather handle. Body with dark age patina, incised Aurelio Hernando and decorated with various motifs executed by burning a series of small dentate marks and including: a heron pursuing a serpent; another bird; a stylized human figure; the word SANTO; a quadraped; a lattice; a cruciform.
Condition: Some chipping at one end; scattered marks, a number of deep bruises, wear.
