A U.S. Model 1803 Type II Harpers Ferry flintlock rifle
dated 1816

The 33 1/2 inch two-stage barrel with deep seven groove rifling in .54 caliber. Breech with two oval stamps, US and eaglehead over P. Lock with Federal eagle, the shield marked US, the lock tail marked Harpers/Ferry/1816. Brass furniture including patchbox. Wedge-fastened walnut half-stock with low cheekpiece and marked opposite lock V/JS and V and behind the triggerguard J-. Iron ramrod.
Condition: Very good. Smooth metal showing brown/grey patina with some scattered light pitting. Sharp markings on barrel and lock, the eagle showing some slight wear. Wood with numerous marks at left side of fore-end tip and between counterplate and lock, chipping between rear counterscrew and breech and an old repair at wrist with filled crack extending from end of barrel tang to end of lock, the piece with what appears to be two dowels.
