A percussion bench rifle by William H. Soper
3rd quarter, 19th century

Heavy 33 inch octagonal barrel (diameter 2") in .58 caliber; rebated muzzle; top flat signed W.H. Soper/Rifle/Maker/London/C.W./Cast Steel/Pat. 1854; scroll-engraved breech; extended tang fitted for telescopic sight; with telescopic sight marked M. James/Utica. (now detached) Signed and engraved back action lock. Set triggers, the front trigger missing. Scroll-engraved triggerguard and buttplate. Walnut buttstock with checkered wrist.
Condition: Very good. Metal showing dark age patina. Sharp markings and generally sharp engraving. Sight retaining much blued finish, the attachment screws and rings missing. Sound wood with scattered light marks.
