A Federal period militia knapsack
circa 1830-50

The square knapsack with wooden frame covered by light blue-painted canvas, the body compartment with cloth covering; black-painted cover piped in red leather, the interior with pocket of striped ticking, the exterior with silvered metal unit initials N E D N. (note small N) Black bridle leather shoulder straps with iron buckles.
Condition: Generally fine, the leather trim scuffed, straps showing surface crazing, some with flaking, the cover straps very tender, one missing the end, one interior strap broken.
