A U.S. Army 'cheese box' canteen with Massachusetts militia markings
circa 1812-40

The black-painted wooden canteen painted on one side M.S., the M overpainted with a US; reverse maker marked E. Burr above a crudely incised R S; sides fitted with three leather straps for the suspension cord.
Condition: Showing wear and scattered marks, the US and MS faded.
