A New England 1821 Pattern militia infantry officer's bell-topped shako by Nathaniel March, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
circa 1825-30

The black leather shako with silvered Model 1821 frontplate in the form of a Federal eagle mounted below a deeply convex leather cockade fitted with a silver button bearing a standing eagle with one claw on the Federal shield. Retaining the original silver bullion cords and tassels and the leather-backed brass chinscales, the side buttons embossed with five-pointed stars. Crown pierced and fitted with white wool plume. Brim lined with green leather. Black leather sweatband. Interior of crown with label depicting a horse with military caparison and marked Nath'l. B. March/Saddle, Harness And/Trunk Maker/Daniel Street/Portsmouth, N.H./Also,/Military Caps, & Curled Hair Mattresses. With original cylindrical pasteboard box, the exterior covered with wallpaper, the lid and interior with newspaper.
Condition: Leather in fine condition with slight deformation to body of shako. 6 inches of seam open on one side of crown. Tip of one wing of frontplate missing. Sweatband showing scuffing and small tears but generally sound.
