A New York militia infantry officer's bell-crowned shako
circa 1821-40

The 1821 pattern black leather shako with seamed front, reinforced lower edge with pointed rear and downcurving brim. Front with 1821 pattern die-struck eagle below a leather cockade mounted with brass button bearing the New York eagle-on-globe and motto Excelsior. Leather-backed, embossed chinscales with eagle rosettes. Front of crown pierced and fitted with red cockfeather plume. Black leather sweatband, the upper edge with short drawstring liner.
Condition: Fine. Leather showing light scuffing. Fittings with slight traces of silvered finish. Tip of one wing of the frontplate broken. Lining showing some tears.
