A dragoon helmet and commission of Sergeant John Harris, 7th New York Dragoon Regiment
circa 1823

The black leather skull with reinforcement panels at front and back, downcurving brim and applied neck guard. Crown slit and fitted with tall, flat gilded brass crest, the upper edge pierced with three small holes. Diamond-shaped die-struck brass frontplate bearing an eagle over a stand of arms. (see note) Skull draped with gold bullion cords depending from fluted eight-pointed brass stars mounted below the crest; left side of skull with a leather cockade, the right side with a Model 1821 gilt brass eagle; rear of skull with a brass grenade-shaped plate bearing a Federal eagle and E Pluribus Unum riband. Leather-backed brass chinscales, the rosettes with Federal eagles. Black leather sweatband. Together with framed commission, dated 1823, from the State of New York to John Harris as Third Sergeant of the 7th Regiment of cavalry in the county of Saratoga. Reverse of frame mounted with a written document, dated 1822, discharging John Harris from a different New York regiment.
Condition: Leather showing crazing and some flaking with one tear at the rear right side. Neck guard deformed. Crest with losses to gilt finish.
