A militia artillery officer's sword
circa 1840-60

Straight 30 inch blade of oval section with 14 inch panel etched with foliage, one side with Federal eagle, the other with panoply incorporating American flags and Phrygian cap. Brass hilt showing slight traces of gilt finish; guard with downturned shell molded with Federal eagle, downturned quillon with disc finial, straight outer quillon with scrolled tip; single chain guard; helmet pommel. Bone grip carved with ribbed panels. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud engraved with small panels of foliage and line and dot borders.
Condition: Blade showing scattered light spotting. Hilt and undented scabbard with dark age patina. Grip with one full-length age crack.
