A militia staff officer's sword by Ames Mfg. Co.

Straight 31 1/2 inch double edged blade of oval section with 14 inch fuller and 19 inch panel etched and engraved with scrolling foliage and oak branches, one side with Federal eagle, the other with stand of flags and maker's markings Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee/Mass. Gilt brass hilt; quillon block with rectangular panel framed by molded foliage, the robust quillons molded with foliage supporting the ball finials; double chain guard; helmet pommel. Mother-of-pearl gripscales bound with brass wire. brass three-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with panels of oak leaves and spear points and a Federal shield with laurel wreath.
Condition: Blade with dull grey metal showing scattered spotting/very light pitting partially obscuring the decoration. Hilt showing traces of gilt finish. One gripscale with minor chip below pommel. Scabbard with traces of gilt finish and several dents above the drag.
