A militia staff officer's sword
circa 1840-50

Straight 30 1/2 inch blade of oval section with 19 inch central fuller and 15 inch panel etched with conventional florals and panoplies of arms. Bronze hilt, the crossguard molded with stylized florals and scales, pointed languets with central oval escutcheons, straight quillons with recurved scrolling finials; unusual chain guard of flat box-like links; pistolgrip pommel molded with foliage. Reeded bone grip. Brass three-ring scabbard with frog stud, foliate engraving and slight traces of silvered finish.
Condition: Blade with dark grey metal showing some light spotting and generally clear decoration. Hilt with dark age patina. Grip fine. Scabbard with smooth, dark brass.
