A militia officer's sword by Nathan P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts

Straight 31 1/2 inch double edged blade of diamond section with 19 inch panel above the ricasso etched and engraved with florals and oak branches; one side with Federal eagle and panoply of arms, the other with stand of flags and scrolled panel inscribed N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield. Brass hilt; the quillon block molded with a six-pointed star, the flat quillons molded with borders and flaring to a tripartite tip, chain guard, helmet pommel. Bone grip of oval section and slightly waisted above the guard. Brass three-ring scabbard with frog stud, the suspension mounts and drag molded with foliage.
Condition: Blade with dark patina showing patches of spotting/light pitting and one nick to edge. Grip with age crack and some small chips, one side with two holes, possibly for an applique, now missing. Scabbard with scattered minor marks and one deep dent to reverse.
