A militia infantry officer's sword retailed by W.H. Horstmann & Sons
circa 1843-60

Narrow, straight 28 1/2 inch single edged blade with 16 inch fuller and 11 inch panel etched with florals and marked W.H.H & S. Brass hilt comprising asymetrical shell molded with Federal eagle, eaglehead quillon, scrolling knucklebow molded with foliage and lion mask, helmet pommel facing forward. Bone grip carved with fluted panels. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with mall panels of foliage.
Condition: Blade with dark grey patina showing patches of spotting partially obscuring decoration. Hilt with dark patina showing generous traces of silver-plated finish in protected areas. Scabbard with smooth brass showing slight traces of silver below throat.
