A militia staff officer's sword
circa 1840-60

Straight 31 inch double edged blade of oval section with 12 central fuller and 14 inch panel etched with fine scrolling tendrils; one side with Federal eagle, the other with panoply of arms. Gilt brass hilt; the recurved guard molded with scrollwork, the pointed languets with spread eagles, grooved ferrule, helmet pommel. Bone grip carved with fluted and ribbed panels. Gilt brass two-ring scabbard with simple suspension mounts and drag.
Condition: Blade with smooth, grey metal showing some light spotting and generally sharp decoration. Hilt and scabbard retain most gilt finish. Crossguard slightly loose. Outer quillon and pommel missing mount for chain guard.
