A militia artillery officer's sword
circa 1821-50

Narrow, straight 32 1/2 inch blade with 18 inch fuller and 13 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with small conventional motifs. Brasshilt comprising downturned shell molded with a beaded shell motif, disc quillon molded with four-petal blossom, scrolling knucklebow with scrolls and blossoms, helmet pommel facing forward. Mother-of-pearl gripscales bound with brass wire. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with foliage and dot and curved line borders.
Condition: Blade with dark, mottled patina showing light spotting and retaining most of the partially faded blued and gilt decoration. Hilt and scabbard with dark age patina, lower half of scabbard with several dents. Gripscales fine.
