A militia artillery officer's sword by Nathan P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts

Straight 31 inch double edged blade with 13 inch fuller and 18 inch panel etched and engraved with scrolling florals and panoplies of arms; one side with Federal eagle, the other marked N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield. Gilt brass hilt; downturned shell molded with Federal eagle, quillon swelling to an oval button, knucklebow with small panel molded with foliate, helmet pommel. Bone grip carved with fluted and shell panels. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud, the engraved oak leaf and acanthus panels with beaded ground.
Condition: Blade with scattered patches of spotting/light pitting partially obscuring decoration. Hilt with generous traces of gilt finish. Knucklebow very slightly bent. Grip with minor age cracks. Scabbard with a few light dents.
