A scarce militia medical officer's sword by Ames
circa 1840-60

Straight 29 1/2 inch double edged blade of oval section with florals; one side with Federal eagle and panoply of arms incorporating a Federal shield and Phrygian cap, the other with panoply of arms below a caduceus. Brass hilt comprising downturned shell molded with Federal eagle, straight quillons with recurved disc finials, double chain guard and helmet pommel. Reeded bone grip. Brass two-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with panels of oak leaves and acanthus; reverse with applied maker's panel N.P. Ames/Maker/Cabotville/Mass.
Condition: Blade with grey metal showing some minor pitting and sharp decoration. Hilt with generous traces of gilt finish in protected areas. Grip fine. Scabbard with minor marks.
