A militia officer's sword
circa 1830-50

Straight 30 1/2 inch blade with central fuller and 14 inch panel etched with fine, scrolling tendrils, one side with Federal eagle, the other with panoply of arms incorporating a Federal shield and Phrygian cap. Brass hilt, the guard with recurved eaglehead quillons, the pointed languets molded with scrollwork; chain guard missing. Unusual helmet-form pommel. One-piece bone grip carved with checkered, fluted and shell panels. Brass scabbard engraved with foliage and spread eagle and retaining a single suspension chain.
Condition: Blade with smooth grey metal showing some light spotting and slight wear to decoration. Hilt with dark patina. Grip fine. Scabbard with mottled patina and some light dents.
