A militia artillery officer's sword by Nathan P. Ames

Straight 31 inch double edged blade with 19 inch panel etched and engraved with scrolling florals; one side with Federal eagle, the other with stand of flags and maker's marking N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield. Gilt brass hilt; the guard with downturned shell molded with Federal eagle, the recurved quillons with disc finials; double chain guard, the links with molded decoration; helmet pommel. Mother-of-pearl gripscales bound with brass wire. Gilt brass three-ring scabbard with frog stud and engraved with panels of oak leaves.
Condition: Blade with dark grey patina showing patches of spotting and generally clear decoration. Hilt retains 40-50% gilt finish. One gripscales with chipping above the ferrule, the wire wrap loose at one end. Scabbard with 20% gilt finish and several deep dents.
