A militia infantry staff officer's sword
circa 1840-60

Straight 32 inch double edged blade with 22 inch panel etched and engraved with scrolling foliage and panoplies of arms, one side with Federal eagle and E Pluribus Unum riband below 15 stars. Silver-plated brass hilt: mameluke-form guard molded with leafy scrolls extending from a circular leafy panel; helmet pommel of extravagant form surmounted by a scrolling crest and perching eagle. Bone grip carved with checkered, shell and herringbone panels. Silvered brass scabbard engraved with foliage and entwined banding enclosing blossoms and with an eagle clutching a Federal shield.
Condition: Excellent blade. Hilt and scabbard retain perhaps 30% silver finish. Grip with age cracks and minor chipping.
