A militia staff officer's sword
circa 1840-60

Straight 31 1/2 inch double edged blade with 15 inch panel etched and engraved on both sides with scrollwork, florals, panoplies of arms and Federal eagles. Gilt brass hilt with spread eagle guard with shell-form finials and perching eagle pommel. Bone grip carved with checkered, fluted and shell panels. Brass three-ring scabbard engraved with foliage.
Condition: Blade with grey metal showing some light spotting and generally sharp decoration. Hilt retains generous traces of gilt finish. Grip with full-length age cracks to either side. Chain guard a replacement. Scabbard showing scattered small dents.
