A militia officer's sword retailed by Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia

Straight 33 inch single edged blade with tapering full-length fuller and 17 inch panel etched and engraved with panels of foliage; one side with U.S., variously framed by stars, acanthus, beaded and embattled bands and flames; the reverse with Federal eagle, the ricasso with the King's head mark of Weyersberg. Brass hilt comprising large, downcurving shell molded with an oak branch and framed by a raised acanthus border; straight, flared quillons of round section; double chain guard; helmet pommel. Elephant ivory grip carved with spiral panels, alternately plain and with foliage. Brass three-ring scabbard engraved with foliage and Federal eagle, the frog stud molded with addorsed C-scrolls; reverse with scroll-form maker's markings Horstmann/& Sons/Makers/Philada.
Condition: Fine blade retaining most original polish and showing scattered small patches of corrosion. Hilt with dark patina, one quillon slightly bent. Grip with one full-length age crack and some chipping below pommel. Scabbard with smooth, clean brass.
