An American eagle pommel militia infantry officer's sword
circa 1830-40

Narrow, straight 31 1/2 inch blade with 11 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with conventional foliage and panoplies and signed at the ricasso S H. brass hilt comprising large shell molded with Federal eagle; rococo knucklebow molded with foliage; ferrule molded with palmettes; sidestraps wit laurel meander; eaglehead pommel. Bone gripscales with fluted panels. Brass scabbard fitted with suspension rings and palmette frog stud.
Condition: Blade with dark patina showing spotting/light pitting and retaining perhaps 40% of the blued finish. Hilt retains generous traces of silvered finish. Gripscales with age cracks and minor chipping. Scabbard showing minor dents.
