An American eagle pommel infantry officer's saber
circa 1805-10, Birmingham for the American market

Curved 30 inch blade with broad, shallow fuller, the lower 17 1/2 inches having blued and gilt panels engraved with foliage and at the base an unusual form of Federal eagle, these alternating with unblued panels etched and engraved with scrolling florals and thistle meander. Silvered brass stirrup hilt, the lobed knucklebow with central disc chased with a cruciform design; Ketland-style eaglehead pommel. Reeded bone grip. Black leather scabbard, the silvered brass mounts with two line borders and fitted with suspension ring and frog stud.
Condition: Blade slightly tipped, showing scattered patches of spotting/light pitting and with retaining much of the blued and gilt finish in the upper part with wear and losses above the hilt. Hilt with dark patina retaining much silver-plated finish. Fine grip with minor age cracks. Scabbard leather with light surface crazing and slightly shrunk but very sound. Upper mounts retain traces of silver.
