An American eagle pommel artillery officer's saber
circa 1810-20, Birmingham for the American market

Curved 30 inch blade with broad fuller below the spine and 12 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with conventional foliage and panoplies of arms, on one side incorporating a Federal shield and Phrygian cap. Brass hilt of rare form, the wide guard molded with banding and blossoms and with 'ballock'-form finial, the knucklebow with a Federal eagle and riband below a panel of ten stars; Ketland-style eaglehead pommel, the feathering extending part way down the back strap. Bone grip with ribbed and fluted panels. Brass two-ring scabbard.
Blade with mottled patina showing areas of light pitting and retaining traces of blued and gilt decoration. Hilt with very slight traces of gilt finish. Grip with two full-length cracks and filled areas below the pommel. Scabbard with dark patina and some scattered light dents.
