An American eagle pommel officer's saber
circa 1810-20, probably French for the American market

Curved 29 1/2 inch blade with 16 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with foliage and panoplies of arms, one incorporating a Federal shield and Phrygian cap; marked above the ricasso Warranted. Brass stirrup hilt, the quillon tip and upper end of knucklebow molded with leaf forms; outer languet with a Federal eagle; eaglehead pommel of French form. Banded bone grip. Brass scabbard crisply engraved with foliage and repeating borders, the suspension mounts with repeating florals.
Condition: Blade showing patches of light spotting and retaining much of the partly faded blued and gilt decoration. Hilt fine, the grip with minor chipping. Scabbard with dark patina and several deep dents and slight fracture above the drag.
