A very unusual non-regulation foot officer's sword
Slightly curved 32 1/2 inch blade with 17 inch panel etched with scrolling florals, laurel branches, panoply of arms and with Federal eagles on either side. Steel half-basket hilt, the broad guard engraved with Federal eagle amidst broad floral scrolls, the back strap with serrated leaves depending from the stepped pommel. Deeply ribbed wooden grip bound with brass wire. Iron two-ring scabbard.
Condition: Fine blade showing some light spotting. Hilt with dark patina showing considerable light pitting. Scabbard with dark patina and some light pitting.

Note: This sword is illustrated on pages 413 and 414 of Civil War Army Swords by John H. Thillmann. The author there describes it as a rare non-regulation officer's sword with British pattern 1790 pommel and grip and 1821 pattern heavy cavalry guard.
