A U.S. Model 1850 Staff & Field officer's sword
French for the American market
French for the American market
Robust, slightly curved 30 inch blade with broad, full-length central fuller and narrow fuller below the spine; marked at the unstopped base with S and crowned B maker's marks. Gilt brass hilt of standard pattern. Dark grey shagreen-covered grip bound with brass wire. Black japanned iron scabbard with gilt brass mounts.
Condition: Excellent blade retaining all original polish. Hilt retains most gilt finish. Grip sound and showing some tiny areas of missing shagreen. Scabbard with some bubbling and loss to the japanned finish. Mounts with dark patina and retaining areas of gilt finish.
