An unusual U.S. Model 1850 Foot officer's sword
Solingen for the American market
Solingen for the American market
Slightly curved 31 inch blade with broad fuller and six inch etched and engraved panel; one side with scrollwork and US, the other with a Federal eagle with extravagantly spread wings; ricasso marked F.H---/Solingen, probably F. Horster. Brass hilt, the pierced guard molded with oak branches and somewhat larger than usual, eaglehead quillon. Grey shagreen and brass wire-wrapped grip. Heavy iron scabbard with brass throat, the brass mounts with engraved and punched decoration.
Condition: Blade with grey patina showing spotting/light pitting with some heavier pitting and slight fracture/repair (?) towards the point. Hilt and scabbard mounts with dark patina, the guard wih slight deformation. Grip showing wear and with some loss to wire.
