An unusual U.S. Model 1860 staff officer's sword of French manufacture

With 33 inch blade of colichemarde form and hollow triangular section. Lower section with blued and gilt decoration and maker marked on the ricasso S.H.F. (probably Samuel Hoppes Fil of Solingen) The gilt brass hilt based on the French Model 1831 general officer's sword and incorporating most of it's decorative elements with the except the front shell which is molded with a spread eagle with Federal style shield on it's breast and with two American flags behind. Folding rear shell molded with confronted griffons. Shagreen-covered grip bound with single strand of twisted silver wire. Scabbard missing but gilt brass throat and chape present.
Condition: Blade with areas of spotting/light pitting towards point and retains most blued and gilt decoration, the bluing degraded to a purplish/brown coloration. Hilt and scabbard mounts retain most gilt finish. Grip with few small areas of wear.
