An early Federal Period eagle pommel officer's spadroon by Thurkle
circa 1795-1800

Straight 31 inch single edged blade with broad, full-length fuller and 12 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with panels of floral meander, panoplies of arms and, on one side, a Federal eagle below 15 stars, the reverse with the figure of a Native American warrior. Brass stirrup hilt, the guard with outboard branch joined by a diamond-shaped cut-out. Eaglehead pommel of classic Thurkle form. Elephant ivory grip with checkered panels.
Condition: Blade with mottled grey patina, some light pitting at the point, and retaining perhaps 50% of the blued and gilt decoration. Hilt with dark patina, one side of ferrule marked in white paint 135. Grip showing some light wear to checkering.
