A historic Civil War grouping of swords and medals belonging to Captain John Heatley Jeffrey

12th and 56th Massachusetts regiments
Condition: Both sword blades showing scattered light pitting. 1) Grip and scabbard covering excellent, the brass with dark patina. 2) Grip wrap showing some wear, guard slightly bent, scabbard finish turned to dark brown patina. 3), 4) and 6) Fine. 5) Some damage to enamel.

Note: Captain John Heatley Jeffrey, enlisted as a private with the 12th Massachusetts Volunteers in June of 1861; promoted to corporal, sergeant, 1st sergeant and then 2nd lieutenant; transferred to 56th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, September of 1863; 1st Lieutenant, October 1864; Captain, March 15, 1865; mustered out July 12, 1865. Served in the 12th Massachusetts under General Banks at the Battles of Cedar Mountain and Winchester, under General Pope at Second Bull Run, with the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 1st Army Corps at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; with the 56th Massachusetts, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 9th Army Corps during the Wilderness Campaign and at the battles of Spottsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon R.R., Popular Spring Church, at the siege and capture of Petersburg and at Lee's surrender at Appomattox. After the war he served as a lighthouse keeper in Crescent City, California.
