Lt. William V. Carr, 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry
Slightly curved 31 1/3 inch blade by Clauberg of Solingen with 10 inch etched and engraved panel above the hilt, one side with scrolling florals framing a spread eagle with E Pluribus Unum riband and a panoply of arms, the reverse with florals and panoply of arms a la antique framing the motto We Never Surrender. Gilt brass hilt of variant Model 1850 type, the guard pierced with scrollwork and affixed with silvered copper bust of George Washington. Silvered copper grip molded and engraved with scrollwork and with laurel wreaths enclosing shield-shaped escutcheons, one molded with a classical figure, probably Pallas Athena. Brass scabbard with elaborate mounts pierced and molded with scrollwork, the top mount incorporating a Federal eagle and shield; the front with presentation inscription 1st Lieut. Wm. V. Carr/Presented by Comp G/2nd Regt. R.I. Vols/Feb. 24th, 1865.
Condition: Blade with grey metal showing scattered minor pitting. Hilt with generous traces of gilt finish, the Washington bust and grip with slight traces of silver plating. Scabbard with clean, undented brass.
