A U.S. Model 1850 Staff & Field officer's sword by William Horstmann & Sons
Slightly curved 33 1/2 inch blade with broad, shallow fuller and 18 inch etched and engraved panel, one side with scrolling florals framing US and incorporating panoplies of arms and banners; reverse with florals, panoplies, Federal eagle, E Pluribus Unum riband and marked W.H.Horstmann/& Sons/Philadelphia above the crowned head mark of the Solingen maker Gebruder Weyersberg. Spine etched Iron Proof. Edge on one side above hilt with inked inscription 1969.779A Gilt brass hilt of standard pattern, the guard pierced with scrollwork and US. Grey shagreen and copper wire-wrapped grip. Brass-mounted iron scabbard.
Condition: Fine blade showing scattered light spotting. Hilt retains most of the gilt finish. Grip with light wear to shagreen. Scabbard body with mottled brown patina, the mounts with slight traces of gilding, the drag with scattered dents.
