An English gilt silver hilted small sword
fourth quarter 18th century

Narrow 32 1/2 inch blade of hollow, triangular section engraved at the forte with small panels of scrollwork and panoplies. Gilt silver hilt comprising oval guard with concentric pierced decoration, the upper side set with small bosses; quillon block, knucklebow and urn-shaped pommel, all pierced and set with faceted silver studs. Grip wrapped in gilt silver tape and twisted silver wire. Complete with vellum scabbard, the gilt silver throat and suspension mount with punched florals, the reverse of throat marked Loxham/Royal/Exchange.
Condition: Blade cleaned at one time and showing sharp engraving and scattered small patches of light pitting. Hilt retains much gilt finish, the oval guard showing small repairs. Scabbard with some staining and one old repair above the drag.
