A continental small sword with parcel gilt hilt
mid-18th century

Straight 31 inch blade of hollow triangular section, the forte engraved with strapwork and scrollwork, one side with a putti carrying a standard; marked above the hilt Blassard/Marchand/Rue du/la Madeleine/a Bruxelles. Iron hilt comprising bilobate guard, rings and knucklebow and ovoid pommel, all chiseled in relief with scrollwork and panoplies of arms and musical instruments on a granulated gold ground. Grip wrapped in plaited silver wire and silver tape. Silver wire turk's heads.
Condition: Blade with dark, mottled patina. Hilt with minor losses to gilt decoration.
