A rare early battle axe head
northern Europe, circa 1000 A.D.

The iron axe head of rather diminutive form; the eared pole with tapered aperture, the projections pointed above and squared below; the blade slightly inclined or bent to one side and flaring to a 4 1/4 inch crescent-shaped welded steel edge.
Condition: Excavated and showing considerable pitting, one 'ear' missing.
