A German stonebow, schnepper
16th/17th century

Comprising slender steel bow retaining an old cord; tapering fore-sight posts with dome finials; projectile channel; built-in gaffle with folding rear sight and worn maker's mark behind; button beneath setting the trigger; fruitwood stock inlaid with six staghorn panels incised with florals framed on one side with a roped horn border, the other side with staghorn panels of monster-headed scrolls framing a shield-shaped panel incised with a bird's head and the initials F.W.; back panel incised A-/1533 and set with brass inventory tag marked WI/1093.
Condition: Metal with dark patina showing areas of light pitting overall. Fore-sights and shaft slightly bent. Stock showing scattered light marks and one chip missing from right side.
