A rare Scottish Highland targe
18th century

The circular shield composed of two layers of wood, possibly oak. The front covered in brown leather tooled with simple circular panels composed of three narrow bands. Large central brass boss engraved with interlace and surmounted by a smaller boss bearing simple banded decoration; this enclosed by six smaller bosses, also engraved with banding and with numerous small brass bosses in circular patterns intersected with triangular brass plates; the bosses all secured by iron nails. Rim bound with leather retained by brass bosses. Reverse retaining perhaps one quarter of the leather covering and fitted with four rectangular iron mounts which retain part of the leather straps.
Condition: Brass with dark patina and some dents. Front showing wear and staining to leather. Reverse with cracks and losses to wood. Rim binding probably later.
