Footnotes
GéraldGenta (1931-2011) was a watch designer most famous for creating the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet in 1972. Born in Geneva, he started his career as an independent watch designer at the age of 30, working with companies such as Bulgari, Universal Genève, Omega and Patek Philippe. In 1968, he designed the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse which became a tremendous success.
Genta is well known for designing the first sporty stainless steel wristwatch for Audemars Piguet. The Royal Oak with its exposed screws and odd octagonal shape case broke many of the classic codes of watch making. The Royal Oak, forty years later, is still one of the most important commercial successes of Swiss watch making.
Based on this success, Genta designed many other iconic watches of the 70's such as the Patek Nautilus, the large IWC Ingenieur and the Cartier Pasha.
In parallel, Genta established his own watch company in 1969. His focus was mainly on minute repeating and the grande sonnerie complications which were seldom seen in wristwatches. Genta was also famous for using Disney characters in his watches. In 1999, the company was sold to Bulgari.
GéraldGenta is considered the most important watch designer of the late 20th Century. His influence on watch making transcends his influence on watch design.
