Footnotes

The original owner of this rare watch was Thomas Cruse (1836-1914), an Irish immigrant that came to America and after years of struggling to strike gold in California, came to Montana hoping for better luck. In 1883, Cruse struck big at Drumlummon and soon after sold the mine to the London Mercantile Association for $1.5 million (roughly the equivalent of $35 million today). Cruse, a man of humble origins, who never learned to read or write, was suddenly one of the richest men in the West. A locally beloved and generous tycoon, Cruse is a legend in the Helena area and was recently inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame.
