1814 Plain 4 1C MS63 Brown NGC S-295, R.1. Large 4 without crosslet. Pleasing golden-brown to olive-brown with a couple of darker patches intermixed in the surfaces. The strike is average as a few of the uppermost curls are softly defined, but the wreath, stars and lettering are all well formed by the dies. There are no distracting spots or patches of roughness, which keeps the eye appeal high. Satiny brown luster and good eye appeal. One of the more difficult type or variety coins to find with pleasing color and especially so in Mint State as most of these are found on rough copper and almost none survived in Mint State conditions. While the 1814 can be had for a price, note that at NGC, there are but 15 graded in MS63, 12 are finer, a pretty strong indication of the rarity and desirability of this coin. (PCGS 1576)

1872 1C MS65 Red PCGS Back in 1996, Q. David Bowers wrote that the 1872 Indian Cent is "a highly prized date in all grades...[with a scarcity] that can be attributed to excessive melting," but as students of the series are well aware, a number of these coins also entered circulation at the time of their mintage, likely in order to serve the ever burgeoning reconstruction-era economic expansion. Most representatives of this approximately 4 million piece delivery are softly struck, exhibiting detail that Bowers characterizes as "hardly needle sharp," and indeed we concur with these aforementioned sentiments, since we almost always come across examples of this issue in either the lower echelons of the Uncirculated grades, with many of these displaying poor highpoint definition. The coin in this lot, however, is every bit the Red Gem, and as such, resides near the apex of the PCGS Population guide, a spot it shares with just 12 other MS65 coins, and two MS66 pieces. Aside from sheer numbers however, we feel that any serious numismatic student will be driven to fervid excitement by the general eye appeal of our offering, for it is possessed of essentially every quality that an aficionado hopes to find in a representative of the date. The color is deeply entrenched and evenly distributed over both sides, presenting in shades of crimson and golden-red tone throughout. The powerful strike has been realized on this planchet by devices that are crisply impressed. 1894 Doubled Date 1C MS65 Red PCGS Snow-1, FS-301. Among small cents of any date and type, the 1894 Doubled Date, as here, is one of the most dramatic - taking a place on the same level as the 1872 Doubled LIBERTY Indian cent and the 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln cent. The four-digit 1894 date logotype was punched once into the die, then perhaps given a second tap with a mallet to deepen the impression, but the Mint employee did not realize that it had slipped, and a double impression was caused.In the vast array of doubled date Indian cents, the 1894 stands tall as this is one of the most dramatically doubled dates in the series. Furthermore, the date 1894, in itself, is scarce with a lower relative mintage of 16,749,500 pieces, so the date has that semi-key aura already. In Mint State condition this is a prized rarity, and with any degree of Red, such a coin is that much more desirable. To find a Gem example of the Doubled Date with full mint Red is simply amazing. To date PCGS has awarded a mere 11 examples (at most) this lofty grade level with a single example seen finer by a grade point. The surfaces are mint fresh with no detracting marks and the strike is sharp, with the doubled date feature clear to the unaided eye. Obviously the engraver entered the date too high and East, with all four digits showing dramatic repunching. (PCGS 92189)

1937-D Three Legged 5C FS-901. An impressively lustrous and delightfully satiny example of the finest order. Bold cartwheel activity supports an essentially fully brilliant appearance. Nicely struck for the date -- not fully so, as this issue seldom comes that way, but with enough details at the bison's shoulder and head to warrant attention here. The surfaces are immaculate in appearance, even under low magnification. Our hobbled bisonus americanus friend on the reverse performs his perfunctory ablutions in a stalwart manner, a hallmark of all genuine examples of this ever-popular variety. Untold scores of examples of this popular variety have passed across this writer's (JRJ) desk over the decades, but few have been anywhere as memorable as the present example. Its in-hand elegance and quality are essentially unbeatable, at least in the writer's opinion, but the opinion that truly counts is yours. Moreover, representatives can be obtained without excessive searching through the numeric designations, making this AU coin a solid bidding opportunity for the high-end type collector, despite the obvious cleaning. The deeply toned appearance that dominates the obverse presents a much lighter display on the reverse. 1983 No S 10C Proof 69 Deep Cameo PCGS With the introduction of the clad Roosevelt dimes in 1965, occasional Proofs have shown up without the S mintmark. These are not Philadelphia issues but regular San Francisco Proofs from dies with the S mintmark omitted in error. All are scarce to rare. Partly to avoid similar omissions, beginning in 1985 each year's master die for Proofs contains the S mintmark.
