Large Stone Currency, Yap Island

largest diameter 23 1/4in (59cm)
carved in the shape of a disc, most likely from limestone, with a slightly raised circular section on one side.

Provenance:
Robert Colson, California, presented as a gift by the 35th chief and President of Yap during a visit to San Francisco in 1985.
After serving as a Navy pilot in the Korean War, Colson began a thirty-four year career as an executive in the Maritime shipping industry. He worked in the Pacific for Matson Navigation, a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin. He later founded San Francisco based Philippines, Micronesia & Orient Navigation Company Inc. (PM&O) in 1979 and expanded a niche service liner operation into the Central Pacific and South Pacific Islands. He served on the Board of Mariz Inc. from 1997 in 2002. Colson's passion for the Maritime industry coupled with his love of the people of the Pacific Island nations was a driving force that helped usher in a new era of modern commerce in the communities his line served.
