akpan, the dead chief of the head Ekpuk, with prominent overhanging forehead with a raised ridge indicating scarifications connoting chiefly rank, the lenticular eyes with raised rims, a forward projecting hinged, beak-like mouth, a pair of oval elements on both sides of the face behind the eyes, the separately carved jaw attached with raffia hinges, four marginal perforations on either side for securing fiber fringe and costume; rich, dark-brown/black patina with old collection label on reverse.

Field collected by Reverend Koeper, a missionary in Eastern Nigeria in the 1930's
