one bar, 1879 (Lieut:J.C.Dewar. 1st Dragn Gds); with Vatican, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; Malta, Order of Malta, neck badge in silver-gilt and enamel. With assorted miniatures, and lapel badge for Pope Pius X. Enamel damage to the Maltese Order otherwise extremely fine. (Lot)

Captain James Cumming Dewar was born on 13.1.1857: Cornet 8.12.1877; Lieutenant 19.2.1879; Captain 2.10.1882. He served with the King's Dragoon Guards in the Zulu War of 1879. He served afterwards with the Mounted Infantry (94th Regt) throughout the operations against Sekukuni, and was present at the attack and capture of the stronghold, 28th November 1879, he was severely wounded, entitled to medal and clasp. Private Francis Fitzpatrick and Private Thomas Flawn both of the 94th were awarded the Victoria Cross for their gallant action in rescuing Lt Dewar. He was severely wounded at the time and was being carried to safety by six Native allies when they were attacked by about 40 Bapedi. The Native allies fled and the two privates who were left in the vicinity rushed to aid Dewar. One man carried him on his back whilst the other covered the retreat and kept off the oncoming enemy.
He later serves with the 11th Hussars. He was Privy Chamberlain to Pope Leo XIII and Pope Pius X. He held the office of J.P., and was also admitted to the Royal Company of Archers in 1901. He died on 29.4.1908, aged 51.
