Pair to Private R.Hogan, 59th Foot,

Afghanistan 1878-80, two bars, Ahmed Khel, Kandahar (965. Pte R.Hogan. 59th Foot.); Kabul to Kandahar Star (965 Private Richard Hogan 59th Regiment). Heavy contact marks to the first, otherwise good fine to very fine. (2)

Private Richard Hogan was born at Roscommon and joined the 59th Foot on 14th Feb 1867, he was formerly a Telegraph Clerk. He served in Ceylon from 5th Sept 1867 to 22nd March 1869 where he then went to the East Indies until 12th Dec 1878. He then went to Afghanistan serving there until 1st Sept 1880, then returned to the East Indies until the 25th Nov 1880, then he returned home and served until the 20th August 1889. He had various promotions throughout his service at one stage reaching Colour Sergeant. He served a total of 22 years and 167 days. Ahmed Khel and Kandahar clasps confirmed on papers.

A total of only 9 Kabul to Kandahar Stars were given to the 59th Foot, and 13 recipients of the Kandahar clasp. H.Y.Usher who is an authority on Lancashire medals denotes Hogan as the only O.R. in the regiment to receive 2 clasps.
