For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On his own initiative he rushed from the support line in full view of the enemy, and attacked a party of the enemy who were bombing the front line. He killed the enemy officer and one man and captured the remaining eight. he showed magnificent courage and resource.

Fos conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all officers of his company had become casualties he took over the command, moving up and down his company front under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire, steadying and encouraging the men. He controlled the fire to such good effect that he kept the line intact against the enemy attack.
