For Conspicuous Gallantry and Devotion to Duty. When directing fire of his battery from a railway truck he was seen by the enemy and heavily shelled for over an hour. Though he was knocked off the truck and the truck itself was hit several times, he continued to direct fire and by his fearlessness took a heavy toll of the enemy. Later a haystack from which he was directing the fire was hit repeatedly and he was knocked off it and badly shaken, but he continued to fire into the enemy until the infantry retired past the guns. His Gallantry and coolness were beyond all praise.

Brigadier Edward Thomas Arthur George Boylan was born on 23rd February 1894 at Hilltown, Drogheda Co.Meath, Ireland. He was educated at the Oratory school and R.M.A. Sandhurst. He was appointed to Second Lieutenant Royal Artillery 19.12.1913; He joined the R.H.A. and landed with the B.E.F. on 20th August 1914; Lieutenant 9.6.1915; Battery Adjutant 1.2.1917-12.11.1917; Captain 2.11.1917; Adjutant 23.6.1919; Retired Captain 1927. Recalled for WW2 service, Major 1940; Lieutenant Colonel 1940; Brigadier 1942. Retired 23.8.1946.
Member of the Irish Landed Gentry (Boylan of Hilltown) and in 1945 appointed Keeper of the Match Book of the Irish Turf Club.
