Imperial Chinese Red Cross society, 9ct gold medal, in the form of two dragons around a Red Cross, the reverse engraved (Imperial Chinese Red Cross 15th October 1909 W Sheldon Ridge). In lacquered box. Together with minor coins (10) and minor banknotes. Very fine. (Lot)

William Sheldon Ridge was born at Selby in Yorkshire on the 10th January 1875, he was educated at Woodhouse Grove; Yorkshire College in Leeds; Victoria University of Manchester and Leeds University. He was the first Headmaster of the Shanghai Municipal Council Public School for Chinese (1904-06). Assistant Editor of "The Shanghai Mercury" from 1905-08. Editor of "The National Review (China)" 1907-16; Leader-writer "The Peking Daily News" 1917-20 and Editor 1920-21; Editor-in-Chief "The Far Eastern Times" 1922-6. Professor of English Language and Literature at Chinese Government and College of Salt Administration from 1920; and at Chinese Government University of Communications from 1927; Lecturer on Chinese Geography and on Chinese International Relations at the North China Union Language School. He died in the spring of 1945 having been interned by the Japanese, he was given a posthumous Mandate by the National Government in January 1946 for his journalist work upholding righteousness and supporting the Chinese cause.

He was married to Annie Francis Ridge who was a Missionary.

The lot comes with some research and photocopied photograph, however the SOAS has a large detailed archive on permanent loan for those wishing to do further research.
